Sustainable fishing
The program:
The sustainable fishing program seeks to transform the relationship between fishing communities and the management of marine resources through participatory governance models, strengthening local capacities, and fisheries tools such as fishing refuge zones.
We promote the transformation of the fishing sector through technical support, capacity building to influence public policy, preservation of its culture, and community engagement.
We promote a sustainable fishing model in which communities are self-managing, serve as role models for environmental responsibility, and have access to preferential markets. Our approach integrates environmental justice, territorial resilience, and compliance with national commitments, aligning with global goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals: Life Below Water (SDG 14), Zero Poverty (SDG 1), and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8).
Achievements
- Creation of the first network of fishery refuge zones in Mexico, approved by the federal government, in the San Cosme to Punta Coyote Corridor, Baja California Sur, where after 10 years, fish populations have increased fourfold.
- We have provided training to 38 fishermen who became fishery technicians and divers, enabling local adoption of the scientific information generated in the fishery refuge zones

Fisheries Management and Fishing Refuge Zones
We strengthen fisheries governance in coastal communities of Baja California Sur, promoting participatory management that ensures the sustainability of marine resources.
We support the design and implementation of the Network of Fishing Refuge Zones (ZRP) in the San Cosme to Punta Coyote Maritime Corridor, as a tool to protect key habitats, recover marine populations, and strengthen artisanal fishing.
We promote community participation, ecological monitoring, and influence in public policies, fostering a co-management model that unites conservation, social justice, and responsible fishing development.
Participatory Fisheries Monitoring
We promote a community science model in the San Cosme to Punta Coyote Corridor, where local fishers collect biological and fisheries information to assess the state of marine resources.
We train and support communities to actively participate in monitoring and decision-making, strengthening local knowledge and the collective management of fisheries.
The data obtained is used to improve management policies and practices, ensuring the sustainability of artisanal fishing and the economic well-being of the families that depend on it.
Development and Well-being in Fishing Communities
We contribute to increasing the social well-being of the fishing communities in the San Cosme to Punta Coyote Corridor (focused initially on Agua Verde), by considering the most important factors (14 variables; action plan on health issues) to develop a better quality of life for the people.
Niparajá is part of a collaborative network that includes individuals and organizations from different sectors who share an interest in ensuring the sustainability of Mexican fishing and aquaculture, called Collective Impact for Mexican Fisheries and Aquaculture (ICPMX).
