Marine Conservation
The program:
Through inclusive social processes and local ownership, the Marine Conservation Program seeks to protect, conserve, and manage the region’s coastal and marine ecosystems due to their ecological, economic, social, and cultural importance.
To achieve this, we include strategies such as generating environmental information and awareness, promoting local governance, fostering local cultural pride and ownership, and ensuring that the use of natural spaces and resources is part of sustainable community-based financial mechanisms.
Achievements
We actively participate in the international management and promotion of Cabo Pulmo National Park, one of Mexico’s greatest marine conservation success stories. Along with thousands of others, we participated in the Cabo Pulmo Vivo campaign to urge authorities to provide effective protection for this site.
We participated in the design, creation, and management of the Espíritu Santo Archipelago Marine Zone National Park.
We participated in the creation and management of the Balandra Flora and Fauna Protection Area.

Underwater Monitoring
We generate technical and scientific information on the state of marine ecosystems in two regions of Baja California Sur:
San Cosme to Punta Coyote Fishing Refuge Zones (Zonas de Refugio Pesquero del Corredor San Cosme a Punta Coyote)
Espíritu Santo Archipelago National Marine Park (Parque Nacional Zona Marina del Archipiélago de Espíritu Santo)
This information supports decision-making and promotes civic participation among coastal communities and users.
The underwater monitoring is carried out annually during the warm season, collecting data from a total of 63 sites. It involves community divers, academia, government, and civil society organizations who contribute to evaluating the effectiveness of the fishing refuge zones and the natural protected areas. This is an intersectoral effort that ensures shared responsibility for environmental stewardship.
Climate Change Adaptation in Coastal Communities
We strengthen the resilience and response capacity of communities to the impacts of climate change. Through participatory methodologies, we understand their contexts, vulnerabilities, and local knowledge to collaboratively design tailored strategies that protect their livelihoods and enhance their well-being in an ever-changing environment.
